FULL LIST AND REVIEWS

Pleasantville (1998) The DVD said “it’s Truman Show meets Back To The Future”, and while it inevitably falls short of such lofty claims, this is still an inspired and thoroughly enjoyable movie. Great performances and stunningly executed visuals make for a unique comedy with a lot of merits, despite the stretched runtime ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Doctor Who: The Movie (1996) Though it showed Doctor Who deserved a bigger budget, it also proved that it required a much stronger storyline. It’s entertaining silly fun for any Whovian, but it would take another 9 years before Doctor Who was truly reinvented ⭐️⭐️⭐️

The Great Escaper (2023) Narratively, it’s a bit of a non-event, but this film does deliver effortless sentiment and emotion in its meditation on love and death. Seeing Glenda Jackson and Michael Caine in the final film roles (posthumously in Jackson’s case) does make for very moving viewing ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Killers of the Flower Moon (2023) While it doesn’t feel the mammoth 3 1/2hrs that it is, it also never fully justifies its length. It’s a fascinating untold story about American Greed, with a host of fantastic performances, but Scorsese can’t help but use the streaming platform money to make a film that would work better with a pause button ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

The Fog (1980) Creepy visuals and a fun supernatural vibe makeup for a script which is narratively lacking. John Carpenters keen eye for design creates a brooding movie with lots to admire ⭐️⭐️⭐️

The Omen (1976) With some truly nasty sequences, this religious horror has a lot of merit. It may be let down by a drawn-out narrative and hammy performances, but it’s a fun flick for the spooky season ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Bottoms (2023) Emma Seligman follows up her hilarious debut ‘Shiva Baby’ with an equally hilarious comedy that wilfully creates a hyper-real high-school world for its characters. The whole cast perform fantastically, each getting their chance to be funny, but it’s the wonderful starring duo of Rachel Sennott and Ayo Edebiri that deserve most of the praise ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Waiting for Guffman (1996) With a whole cast of great performances, this is an occasionally hilarious deadpan mockumentary celebrating the quirky characters that often converge in community theatre, but one that also misses a few too many opportunities for bigger laughs ⭐️⭐️⭐️

The Killer (2023) The meticulous breakdown of an assassins process is a perfect project for David Fincher’s detail-oriented style. A laser-focused performance from a returning Michael Fassbender and a thrillingly dark tone makes for captivating viewing ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Napoleon (2023) A messy but epic portrait of the iconic French leader, juxtaposing his military journey against his turmulous relationship with Empress Josephine. Joaquin Phoenix brings a surprising amount of comedy to the role, and portrays well all of the leader’s insecurities ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
