After the monster of a blockbuster that was Avengers: Endgame, 'Spider-Man: Far from Home' seemed like a terrible idea. Coming out only three months later, it seemed sure that Marvel would fall flat after undertaking the aforementioned Mammoth task. What a joy it is to say that this Spider-Man sequel proved me wrong, and also proves the MCU is far from over.

Ever since Christopher Nolan moved on, DC have really struggled to make their movies work. From a bad start, to a dreadful middle and a strangely fishy end, their franchise so far has only delivered one great movie. Though Shazam! is probably the second-best film in the DCEU (DC Extended Universe) after Wonder Woman…it’s still not great.
After Twenty MCU films, the Twenty First finally has a female lead. Captain Marvel is a fascinating character, and this origin film does wonders to explain her and her motivations. However, with a huge Thanos-shaped shadow still hanging over the MCU, this film suffers from a lack of stakes, originality or excitement.
Re-releasing Deadpool 2 as a PG-13 festive comedy sounded like a fun idea. Marketing showed Deadpool kidnapping Fred Savage before reading him the bedtime story of Deadpool 2 in a running joke about the premise of The Princess Bride. It’s always going to be a bold claim to make after the hugely successful Infinity War coming out, but Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is the best superhero movie of 2018. Infinity War, with it’s exciting scenes and bold ending, was still fairly by the numbers. Huge CGI action and a dreadful subplot about Thor’s axe brought it down in my rankings. This, however, is such a powerful film, with amazing humour, incredible design and heartbreaking emotion.
Ant-Man and The Wasp is the latest addition to the MCU, and after the dark, brooding ‘Infinity War’, it was nice to see a return to a lighter side. However, with this also comes a plethora of returning clichés, and by the end of the film, you start to wonder whether Marvel are starting to go stale.

SPOILER-FREE REVIEW. Having avoided all trailers, I went in blind, and while it was still a fantastically enjoyable film (that totally beats Avengers: Age of Ultron), it had some flaws aswell.
Well, I’d like to rename 2017 “the year that Marvel killed it”. Having already watched Guardians 2 and Thor 3, I finally got around to seeing Spider-Man: Homecoming, and blimey was I impressed yet again.
