The Shining is widely regarded as one of the greatest horror films ever made (and has always been a firm favourite of mine). In 2013, Steven King (author of the original) wrote a sequel, and this is that adaptation. A sequel to the Kubrick masterpiece but still a film of it’s own, it’s a love letter to the original with enough scares and twists to stand alone.

A Dark, Daring and Disturbing Descent into Madness (Joker review)
The press running up to the release of Joker has been plagued with two stories. One is critical acclaim from festivals and reviews alike, claiming it to be the greatest film of the year. The other story is the fear that the film actively promotes violence, anti-social behaviour, toxic masculinity and sympathises with the criminally … Continue reading A Dark, Daring and Disturbing Descent into Madness (Joker review)
Daddy Issues… In Space (Ad Astra review)
In 2019’s answer to the endless popularity of Space Exploration films, ‘Ad Astra’ presents a poetic narrative that wouldn’t be out of place in ‘2001’. In Brad Pitt’s second film of the year, he voyages away from 1969 and into the near distant future to tell a story of hope, determination and fatherhood.
Si vis pacem, para bellum (John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum review)
While other action films focus on grandeur, CGI spectacle and superheroes, the John Wick stands alone. Rising like a phoenix from the ashes of grey Michael Bay flicks, the John Wick franchise is one that focuses on action in its purest form. The third instalment of the franchise promises that its supreme reign is far from over, delivering all the thrilling, over the top action that we have come to expect.
Marvel-Less Entertainment (Shazam! review)
Ever since Christopher Nolan moved on, DC have really struggled to make their movies work. From a bad start, to a dreadful middle and a strangely fishy end, their franchise so far has only delivered one great movie. Though Shazam! is probably the second-best film in the DCEU (DC Extended Universe) after Wonder Woman…it’s still not great.
A-Peele-ing Horror (Us review)
The follow up is one of the hardest things to do, and Jordan Peele had an extraordinarily high bar to reach. The Oscar winning ‘Get Out’ was his debut feature, and his satirical horror as been hailed a modern masterpiece. Thankfully, he didn’t crumble under the pressure, and his second film ‘Us’ confirms that he is a visionary filmmaker who’s just getting started.
Chilling Revenge (Cold Pursuit review)
Liam Neeson has decided to do something different with his career. After years of starring in action thrillers where a man gets revenge for losing a family member, he has now made a film about a man who gets revenge after losing a family member…but this time it’s a comedy (sort of). Cold Pursuit isn’t … Continue reading Chilling Revenge (Cold Pursuit review)
Trapped in a Screen for 99mins (Escape Room review)
If you love The Hunger Games, David Fincher’s The Game and Saw, then this is the film for you! Based on the international hit entertainment game, Escape Room is a nasty tale of how being trapped in a room could always get worse. Unfortunately, it loses its thrills with a flimsy plot and cheap jokey dialogue.
Final Desti-Painting (Velvet Buzzsaw review)
Dan Gilroy is the writer and director of Nightcrawler, the neo-noir thriller that is widely regarded (in my opinion too) as one of the best films of recent years, and now he has come to Netflix with his latest flick, Velvet Buzzsaw. The film is a great satire of the art world that offers fantastic … Continue reading Final Desti-Painting (Velvet Buzzsaw review)
Shattering the superhero formula (Glass review)
Bringing together the characters of Unbreakable (2000) and Split (2016), Glass is the final chapter in M. Night Shyamalan’s unlikely superhero trilogy, nineteen years in the making. Despite some minor narrative issues, Glass delivers the superhero thrills you’d expect, while also offering a lot more depth than the average comic book film.
